Asbestos Evaluation

Although asbestos has desirable building characteristics it has been found to cause lung cancer and lung disease when microscopic fibers are inhaled. Elevated concentrations of airborne asbestos fibers can occur after asbestos-containing materials are disturbed by cutting, sanding or other remodeling activities. Improper attempts to remove these materials can release asbestos fibers into the indoor environment, increasing asbestos levels and endangering people and animals. Some of the sources associated with Asbestos contamination are: Deteriorating, damaged, or disturbed insulation, fireproofing, acoustical materials, wall board, joint compound and floor tiles.

Prior to renovation or demolition a building owner must inform contractors of the presence, location and quantity of impacted asbestos materials. G&S provides the initial testing and quantification of asbestos. Bulk sampling of impacted materials is appropriate when only select areas will be impacted. When the purpose of the sampling is to notify occupants of the presence of asbestos a full survey is usually required. Asbestos surveys are performed by EPA accredited building inspectors employed by G&S, under the direct supervision of a Florida Licensed Certified Asbestos Consultant.
